Sleep To Live Well Foundation Partners with NorCal’s Legacy Mental Health Organization, FAMILY PATHS, and Launches Embracing Sleep Wellness Family Guide

12/22/2025 by Susan von Seggern

San Jose, California – December 2, 2025 — The Sleep To Live Well Foundation (STLW) is thrilled to announce its partnership with Northern California’s noted mental health and family support organization, Family Paths, which has been serving the community’s needs for over 50 years. Sleep To Live Well supports Family Paths’ mission to empower and strengthen families by offering Sleep Wellness education resources to their clinicians, program services teams, and the hundreds of parents and children they serve.

“We are pleased to announce that Family Paths is our inaugural community partner, given their exemplary 50-year+ legacy of strengthening families. We expect our Sleep Wellness resources to augment their efforts in fostering resilience, particularly among children,” said Scarlet Nickhol, STLW’s executive director and chief marketing officer. “Furthermore, we consider ourselves privileged to collaborate with Family Paths Executive Director Barbra Silver before her retirement this year, following her 27 years of service at the organization, thereby incorporating this dimension of support during her tenure.”

“Family Paths is honored to be the first community partner to help launch this important resource with the Sleep to Live Well Foundation,” said Executive Director Barbra Silver. “Over the past 50+ years, Family Paths has worked to empower and support parents and children and give them tools to heal from the impact of trauma and stress. Understanding the importance of sleep as a source of resilience and improved health is aligned with our goal of strengthening families.”

The timing of the partnership is fortuitous, as it comes just as Sleep To Live Well is releasing its guide to help parents combat the CDC-declared public health epidemic of insufficient sleep, which is adversely affecting the health of millions of children and adults in the U.S.

Embracing Sleep Wellness: A Family Guide To Transforming Sleep Resistance Into a Nurturing Ritual, authored by Dr. Roger Washington, MD, FAAFP, with Scarlet Nickhol, MPP, MBA, is an essential 64-page guide to establishing Sleep Wellness in the household. Family Paths will utilize the guide and other STLW materials in parenting programs and with the children it serves.

“The mental health clinicians at Family Paths, led by Clinical Director Rene DValery, are the perfect conduit for our Sleep Wellness Screening Protocol and Digest tools,” said STLW Founder and Medical Director Dr. Roger Washington, a family physician of 35 years. “For too long, our healthcare providers have lacked proper training and resources to assess sleep quality as an indicator of health and wellness—physically, mentally, or emotionally. With our screening kit, they have a method to quickly evaluate whether inadequate sleep contributes to the health issues they are observing in individuals and families, along with guidance to prompt Sleep Wellness practices.”

More on the Family Guide for Transforming Bedtime
Created for Sleep To Live Well by Stanford-trained physician and sleep wellness advocate Dr. Washington (aka “Doctor Bedtime”), the family guide, Embracing Sleep Wellness, provides actionable strategies for parents and caregivers to address children’s bedtime resistance, create nurturing rituals, and support lifelong healthy sleep habits. With practical advice for parents, tips for managing bedtime for different age groups, and a focus on emotional resilience, the guide is poised to become a vital resource for any household.

Key Features:

  • Easy-to-follow steps for fostering Sleep Wellness at any age
  • Guidance on recognizing and honoring sleep cues
  • Rituals for creating a calm, secure bedtime environment
  • Solutions for families with multiple children or challenging schedules
  • Section for adults to “unlearn” bad sleep habits and model healthy practices

“Our goal is to break cycles of sleep deprivation and empower the next generation with tools for resilience and well-being, especially among youth experiencing stress and trauma,” says Dr. Washington.

What People Are Saying About the Family Guide
“Simple, practical advice that actually works—made bedtime way less of a struggle at our house.” – Parent of 6 and 13-year-olds.

“We needed advice on how to reframe bedtime so that sleep is not a punishment.” – Parents of three children.

Sleep To Live Well Foundation Launches With Groundbreaking Sleep Wellness Report to Tackle National Epidemic and Transform Public Health

07/17/2025 by Susan von Seggern

San Jose, CA – July 15, 2025 – The Sleep To Live Well Foundation issues an urgent warning in its groundbreaking 2025 State of Sleep Wellness Report, titled “THE SILENT EPIDEMIC: How Lack of Sleep Endangers Over Half of All Americans and Threatens Everyone.” The report unveils the Foundation’s initiatives to address this insufficient sleep crisis with Sleep Wellness—a holistic approach to Sleep Health that offers a deeper solution than trendy ‘sleep hygiene’ approaches, products, and tips on social media.

Established as a private operating foundation by Stanford-trained Family Physician Dr. Roger Washington, MD, FAAFP, Sleep To Live Well (STLW) is dedicated to helping everyone reclaim their natural ability to sleep deeply. STLW is focusing its initial Sleep Wellness advocacy, education, and resources on the most vulnerable: children experiencing toxic stress and trauma.

“Despite decades of awareness, insufficient sleep remains a national crisis—deeply cultural, quietly generational, and corrosive to our health,” says Dr. Roger Washington. “We’re especially concerned about how this epidemic continues to undermine the well-being of our youth.”

The 2025 State of Sleep Wellness Report is a Wake-up Call

STLW’s State of Sleep Wellness Report paints a troubling picture: A 2020 survey revealed that 40 million Americans are grappling with sleep disorders. Alarmingly, 60% of adults reported struggling with sleep problems several nights each week. A recent CDC study worsened this concern, revealing that 50% of children—around 37 million—and 62% of adults—about 161.2 million—are at risk for serious sleep-related illnesses and diseases. The Report underscores the link between insufficient sleep and serious health consequences, with trauma in the lives of Americans from the pressure of modern-day stress and current events.

Sleep Wellness is the Missing Link–the Human Connection

As the Medical Director of STLW, Dr. Washington leverages 35 years treating patients with sleep therapy to develop preventive practices and guidance that extends beyond sleep hygiene tips. This Sleep Wellness approach in all STLW resources addresses sleep-resistant behaviors and trauma-related barriers that disrupt sleep. By combining cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed care, Sleep Wellness motivates behavioral changes and better decision-making for improved sleep.

Key STLW Sleep Wellness Initiatives and Resources

  • Children’s Book: Doctor Bedtime’s SLEEP MAGIC: SuperPowers for Super-Sleepers empowers children to embrace sleep as a source of strength.
  • Parent & Caregiver Guides: Embracing Sleep Wellness – A Family Guide To Transforming Bedtime Resistance Into A Nurturing Ritual. A 64-page guide of advice for children and grace for sleep-deprived parents.
  • Clinical Sleep Wellness Screening Toolkit: A 3-step Sleep Wellness protocol to assess poor sleep quality in children, along with a Digest that supports trauma-informed care in medical settings. Available to participating clinicians who partner with STLW and ACEs Aware.
  • Charitable Programs: As part of its community engagement, STLW collaborates with pre-, elementary-, and after-school programs and other children’s wellness partners to distribute resources.

Initial Focus on Children: STLW’s first concern is supporting children, especially those identified by healthcare providers through ACEs Aware, an initiative aimed at treating adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) early on. STLW is providing children, their parents, and their caregivers with intervention tools that develop sleep “SuperPowers” to combat stress and break cycles of generational sleep resistance.

Empowering Parents and Healthcare Providers: STWL focuses on preventative medicine by partnering with community organizations to equip parents and caregivers with practical guides and bedtime rituals. It also offers healthcare professionals screening toolkits to connect sleep quality with pediatric illnesses and advocate for sleep wellness interventions before sleep disorders and related diseases become chronic.

Leadership
Dr. Roger Washington, MD, FAAFP: Founder and Medical Director. A nationally recognized family physician, educator, and author of Lack of Sufficient Sleep Matters: Decoding the Root Cause of Your Illness, Dr. Washington’s pioneering research and personal journey have established Sleep Wellness as a component of preventive and integrative healthcare.

Scarlet Nickhol, MPP, MBA: Executive Director, Chief Marketing Officer, and co-author of STLW’s educational materials, leads management and administration, program development, partnerships, and outreach.

05/14/2024 by Susan von Seggern

Los Angeles, CA – April 30, 2024 – DisclosureFest and Fade to Black will host the Mass Meditation Initiative on Summer Solstice Weekend, Friday, June 21- Sunday, June 23, 2024. This event has been the 9th Mass Meditation Initiative festival since 2017, following several events in SoCal, Washington DC, and Las Vegas. The event brings top electronic, spiritual, and jam music artists; conscious speakers and workshops on health, wellness, the environment, and humanitarian topics; yoga classes, sound baths, and an art walk featuring world-renowned visionary artists; vegan plant-based foods; and a children’s space offering a multitude of activities throughout the weekend.
The festival will kick off on Friday, June 21, at 10:00 AM, and yoga classes start as early as 7:00 AM on Saturday and Sunday. So, plan on arriving early to get grounded, stretch, and prepare for fully immersive days at the Castaic Lake Lagoon (32132 Castaic Lake Dr., Castaic, CA 91384), at the Interstate 5 exit at Hughes Lake Road, just 41 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

The Mass Meditation is scheduled for 2:22 PM Pacific Daylight Time on Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, and will be live-streamed at https://disclosurefest.org/live/. During the mass meditation, everyone on site, expected to be around 10,000 people, will meditate with an online global audience. This year’s meditation focuses collective energy on water and its importance in sustaining life, supporting global healing, and enabling change for humanity and the planet.

Mass meditation offers numerous benefits, both for individuals and society as a whole. When large groups gather to meditate simultaneously, they create a powerful collective energy that can positively impact the surrounding environment. Scientific studies have shown that mass meditation can lower crime rates, reduce stress levels, and even decrease incidents of conflict around the world. This phenomenon is attributed to synchronizing brainwave patterns among participants, leading to a state of coherence and harmony.

Additionally, mass meditation fosters a sense of community and interconnectedness, promoting empathy and understanding among individuals. Our organization, DisclosureFest Foundation, has been widely recognized by prestigious publications such as the Smithsonian and Newsweek for its impact on global change through its Mass Meditation Initiative. As more research delves into the science behind meditation and its collective effects, its potential for fostering peace and well-being on a global scale becomes increasingly evident.

Attendees are invited to immerse themselves in live music at three music stages. Performers include Rising Appalachia, Deya Dova, Porangui, Mike Love, Shaman’s Dream, and Sonic Devas. Premier DJs include Marques Wyatt, DJ Dan, Doc Martin, and more. Further music details are here.

This year, the DisclosureFest Foundation introduces its Integration Series Workshops. These two-day workshops, held on Saturday and Sunday, are designed to transform attendees, and facilitate the integration of newfound knowledge.

NEW DOCUMENTARY PUTS TECHNOLOGY ADDICTION IN THE SPOTLIGHT

12/08/2021 by Susan von Seggern

DETOX aims to create urgent dialogue on digital wellness, helps parents address and prevent addiction symptoms

Los Angeles, CA – November 16, 2021 — Documentary filmmaker, David Donnelly, today announced a new film to address the increasingly alarming issue of technology addiction, entitled DETOX. The feature-length documentary explores how pervasive technology use is impacting our daily health and wellness, and offers solutions for reducing the harmful effects of tech reliance.

In March 2020, a screening series at The Kennedy Center for Donnelly’s previous documentary, FORTE, was canceled as the nation began closing doors for COVID-19 safety precautions. Donnelly, whose livelihood is making international films, was grounded, and while quarantined in London, began to explore the disturbing proliferation of technology addiction symptoms. His fascination and research became the basis for DETOX.

“The combination of global wifi and ubiquitous smartphone usage is influencing the behavior of billions of people, and yet we know so little about how it’s actually impacting us as humans,” said Donnelly. Since he began making the film, countless events have unfolded that spotlight the issue, including Facebook’s recent whistleblower news.

The film features shocking new insights on how tech devices are affecting our physical and mental health from digital sociologist and author, Dr. Julie Albright; bestselling author Robert Greene; the co-founder of one of the nation’s first technology addiction centers Dr. Hilarie Cash; and more. These experts identify the roots of the problem and provide easy, applicable solutions for healthier relationships with technology–especially for parents who are routinely monitoring phone and technology exposure for their families.

The filmmakers are producing the film independently before approaching distributors to maintain the focus and integrity of the message. An Indiegogo campaign is now live to help the film launch essential conversation on digital wellness–supporters can choose virtual premiere tickets, an accompanying DETOX book featuring bonus interview content, exclusive NFTs, and sponsored screenings.

About David Donnelly
Donnelly is an award-winning American filmmaker, writer, speaker, artist, and entrepreneur. He has written, directed, and produced music videos, video installation art, short films, and feature-length documentaries, which have been featured in Forbes, Playbill, and NPR. He has directed three films, Forte, Nordic Pulse, and Maestro, and is currently working on his fourth, Detox. Donnelly’s educational films are used in thousands of classrooms across North America.

David Nikzad’s Noted “Utopian Holding Company” Orthogonal Thinker Has Relocated to Miami to Lead for the Future

11/10/2021 by Susan von Seggern

Miami, Florida – November 1, 2021 – Orthogonal Thinker, a self-described “Utopian Holding Company” led by noted investor and exec David Nikzad, is pleased to announce its move to the hottest new venture market – Miami, Florida. This move has invigorated the company, leading to 15 new deals inked since he arrived in early July. Orthogonal makes strategic investments and joint-ventures with companies which contribute to the Orthogonal eco-system of companies in new and emerging industries.

Nikzad, founder and CEO of Orthogonal Thinker notes, “Part of the secret of my success is that I’m just enough ahead of the curve, and my recent move to Miami is just another example of that. We are so excited to be part of the growth of the South Florida startup scene, which is so inclusive of the verticals we specialize in – space, crypto, cannabis, psychedelics, and clean food.”

Orthogonal’s most exciting company is their subsidiary Ei.Ventures. Ei has had an amazing year, cresting $20M committed with their Reg A. As part of their research and development into natural psychedelic compounds, EI recently announced via Forbes that they have partnered with transdermal delivery powerhouse Tioga Research to develop a transdermal patch for sustained delivery of psilocin, the active ingredient in psilocybin mushrooms, for mental health applications.

As part of Ei’s dual track approach, they are planning to launch their line of functional mushroom MANA nutraceuticals imminently, and a functional beverage with mushroom botanicals in early 2022.

Building companies through crowdfunding has always been part of Orthogonal’s DNA, as some early investments included crowdfunders WeFunder, RealCrowd, DealMaker, and Republic. Through this experience and the recent success of Ei’s Reg A, Orthogonal is now positioned as a leader in the Reg A fundraising space and have vertically integrated their internal team to manage Reg A raises for their portfolio companies.

Nikzad adds, “We couldn’t be more bullish on Miami and are looking to show our gratitude for the wonderful reception we’ve gotten in South Florida by bringing funding from all levels of investors to this growing region.”

Noted Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Theresa Fossum Adds CogniCaps, a cognitive function supplement, to her Popular Line of Natural Animal Supplements

09/14/2021 by Susan von Seggern

Scottsdale, AZ – Noted veterinary surgeon Dr. Theresa Fossum DVM, MS, Ph.D., Diplomate ACVS, and author of the most referenced book on its topic, Small Animal Surgery, has added a new product to her popular line of natural animal supplements Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care, CogniCaps, to support healthy brain function in aging dogs.

Dr. Curtis Dewey, a veterinary neurologist with extensive knowledge of the brain concerns aging dogs often experience, collaborated on the development of CogniCaps with Dr. Fossum. The supplement, a combination of eastern and western modalities, was created in an easy to administer capsule format and contains a proprietary blend including our own BioCog formula (registration pending) plus vitamin E, zinc, naturally occurring phytochemicals such as curcumin, oral S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), and phosphatidylserine, a membrane phospholipid. In addition, the supplement contains a number of herbs from Traditional Chinese Medicine that have been shown to support cognitive function.
According to Dr. Dewey, the estimated prevalence of cognitive concerns in older dogs generally varies between 14% and 35% of the pet dog population; however, these numbers are likely an underestimation. As with people, cognitive decline in dogs can increase dramatically with age; as many as half of all dogs 11-12 years old are likely experiencing age-related decline, and nearly 70% of dogs over the age of 15 are affected. Importantly, dogs may show evidence of brain changes as early as 4-6 years of age.

Even mild or moderate changes in cognitive ability can make living with affected pets difficult. Dogs may become disoriented and frequently become “stuck” in a corner of a room, they may urinate or defecate in the house because they may be temporarily confused about where the appropriate place to go is. They may seem stressed, they may bark at inappropriate sounds or objects, and they may become less interactive with their owners. Affected dogs often develop sleep disturbances (they are active and may vocalize at night, but they sleep during the day). In a word, these pets show signs of senility.

Dogs affected with changes in cognitive ability typically respond well to intervention, especially if instituted early in the process. Precautionary measures such as dietary changes and environmental enrichment can both help, and slow the progression of cognitive decline due to aging. This suggests that simple changes including health supplements as provided in CogniCaps may be generally advisable in pet dogs as they approach middle age.

Because there are so many individual health supplements for cognitive decline, veterinarians and their clients are often faced with the prospect of recommending multiple separate supplements to produce a positive response. It is also common practice to separate the recommendation into the categories of western and eastern medicine. Again, this conceptualization leads to the necessity of multiple supplements-both western (conventional) and eastern (non-conventional, holistic, etc.). Although pet owners often will administer multiple supplements to their senior dogs, it can be challenging. Also, it is unlikely that the average pet owner will administer multiple supplements to a well seeming middle-aged dog. CogniCaps is a truly integrative health supplement, combining a mixture of both western and eastern ingredients in one small capsule, allowing for ease of use for pet guardians to support keeping dogs’ minds sharp as they age.

Successfully Used on Animals Escaping from Fire, Noted Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Theresa Fossum Adds Wound Therabee, with Certified Manuka Honey For Animal Cuts and Burns, To Her Popular Line

08/09/2021 by Susan von Seggern

Container of Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care, Wound TherabeeScottsdale, AZ – Noted veterinary surgeon Dr. Theresa Fossum DVM, MS, Ph.D., Diplomate ACVS, and author of the most referenced book on pet operations, Small Animal Surgery, has added a new product to her popular line of natural animal supplements Dr. Fossum’s Pet Care, Wound Therabee, with certified Manuka Honey for animal cuts and burns.

While in development, the product was used during Northern California’s Bear Fire in 2020 on numerous dogs and cats that had been burned escaping from the flames by veterinarians from the VCA Valley Oak Veterinary Center in Chico, California. The co-medical director there, Dr. Daniel Gebhart noted, “we were so impressed by the Manuka Honey/Cannabinoid ointment that is now available as Wound Therabee. Finding this incredible product was one of the few positives to come out of our fire experience. With over 80 fires already this year, and with more to come since it’s only July, we urge our veterinary colleagues to stock up on this incalculably valuable salve.” (see before/after picture below)

Wound Therabee combines sterile Manuka honey with hemp extract. This formulation is a great all-around first aid kit addition for wounds, sores cuts, and burns. It contains 100% active Leptospermum honey (Manuka honey), harvested by bees in New Zealand and infused with potent cannabinoids including CBD, CBG, and CBN.

While honey is often used as a folk remedy, regular table honey is actually not sterile and not antibacterial. Wound Therabee features an active ingredient that is unique to Manuka honey produced by bees pollinating the Leptospermum Scopartum shrub. It’s produced and regulated in New Zealand, is traceable, is free of pesticides, chemical residues, and antibiotics, and has a unique manuka factor (UMF) of 12.

Manuka honey is quite an impressive substance! Indigenous cultures have used this honey as a wound treatment for thousands of years due to its natural broadband healing properties from a highly concentrated viscous solution of floral sugars and amino acids derived from the crop of the bee. And it can be stored and remain stable unrefrigerated for over a thousand years!

The properties of Manuka honey include low water content, acidity (pH 3.9), high sugar content (80%), high osmolarity, it generates hydrogen peroxide, antimicrobial peptide (Bee defensin-1), phytochemicals including flavonoids, terpenes, antioxidants and polyphenols, and methylglyoxal (MGO) that correlates with Unique Manuka Factor (UMF).

The addition of cannabinoids to the Manuka honey may help reduce discomfort and itching.
Dr. Fossum notes, “while our proof of concept came from a very intense situation, we are proud to offer this natural ointment to our fellow veterinarians and pet parents for hopefully less dire but useful animal wound care.”
