10/15/2025 by Susan von Seggern

Plus, Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism Tour Using Music Industry Therapist Collective’s Services on Current Global Swing
“The life of a musical artist can be a magnificent thing when you’re on stage experiencing the enthusiasm and appreciation for your work and seeing first-hand the incredible impact it can have. Being away from home and the watchful eye of your loved ones can be incredibly hard work mentally as you go around the world at a pace dictated by the tour. Having what is effectively a mental health wellness manual to keep yourself in check is a wonderful initiative.” Nile Rodgers

“I wish this book had been around when I first started touring … It should be the first thing we all pack when we head out on the road.” Philip Selway, Radiohead
The widely praised music industry mental health manual from the Music Industry Therapist Collective (MITC), Touring and Mental Health; The Music Industry Manual edited by psychotherapist Tamsin Embleton, will be released as an audiobook today. Following the paperback publication of the book by the leading UK music book imprint Omnibus in 2023, the new audiobook will be released with an array of special new features including an epigraph by Nick Cave and meditation exercises by Rob Da Bank. The audiobook will also be narrated by the actor and voiceover artist Laura Howard (Midsomer Murders) and directed by Jeremy Hindmarsh (Swervedriver) and Peter Morris (Soho Voices). Music by Edward Butler.

The audiobook makes this essential resource significantly more accessible, especially for those who are neurodiverse, time-poor, or too stressed to sit and read a 600+ page manual. Now touring artists can access the manual anywhere, whether in a bunk, walking around the venue or on long drives.

The first one of its kind, the comprehensive manual, helps musicians, touring artists and those working in live music to identify and cope with the various physical and psychological difficulties that can occur during, or as a result of, touring. Written by health and performance professionals, this timely and essential book provides robust clinical advice, cutting edge research, practical strategies, resources and detailed illustrations. The audiobook features original interview recordings, including powerful insights from artists such as Nile Rodgers, Philip Selway, Charles Thompson IV (Pixies), Katie Melua, Will Young, Pharoahe Monch, Justin Hawkins, Neil Barnes, Kieran Hebden (aka 4 Tet), Laura Marling, Taylor Hanson, Erol Alkan, Natasha Hendry, and Christopher Tait.

Covering a variety of topics including mental health, peak performance and performance anxiety, addiction, group dynamics, relationship problems, dealing with the media, physical health, diversity and inclusion, crisis management and post-tour recovery, the manual is the go-to guide for dealing with the stress and pressure of being on the road.

In other exciting news, Dua Lipa’s tour director Peter Abbott was praising MITC’s work and the work of the brilliant Sascha Heeney who has been on the Dua Lipa Radical Optimism World Tour as MITC’s Welfare Officer. Please see the story in Light & Sound International here, on page 54 under Welfare & Operations.

Tamsin Embleton says: “In 2010, I was touring Europe with Anna Calvi and Grinderman (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ side project). I’d worked as a venue and festival booker and artist manager previously, and thought I knew what touring was all about. Within days, it became clear that I had completely underestimated how arduous it could be. We weren’t partying – there were no hangovers to blame – just the sheer accumulation of pressure, sleep deprivation, constant change, homesickness, long hours and emotional strain. My mood and mindset deteriorated, and by the time I got home, I had post-tour flu and two burning questions: was I the only one who felt this way? And if not, was anyone addressing it?”

That experience led me to retrain as a psychotherapist and make tour health my specialist field of study. Through years of research and frontline work, I discovered I wasn’t alone – many people struggle on the road, especially under intense touring conditions. Research tells us that performers and crew are at high risk of burnout, anxiety, depression, addiction and even suicidality, yet they are also some of the most underserved by health services. Unlike other high-pressure work environments, most touring personnel don’t have access to occupational health support or HR.

This audiobook explains what makes touring so challenging, how stress impacts your body, mind and relationships, and what can be done to mitigate that stress. It brings together clinical advice from experts in performance health and related fields, along with powerful insights from artists and crew, taken from many hours of original interviews. Hearing people speak in their own words brings these psychological concepts to life in a unique and accessible way.

Today, artists and crew are under growing pressure to tour intensively, just to cover rising costs. But the more intense the schedule, the greater the risk of serious health consequences. Touring can be thrilling and deeply rewarding, but it also isolates you from the relationships and routines that help you stay grounded. Many people are managing pre-existing health conditions that worsen on the road or are overwhelmed by cumulative stress without adequate support in place to help them cope.

This audiobook goes some way to plugging that gap. It’s designed for anyone who wants to better understand and prepare for the realities of touring – and to create healthier, more sustainable practices across the industry. As recent statements from artists like Chappell Roan and Lewis Capaldi have shown, the need for reform is urgent. We can no longer romanticize artist suffering. It’s time to take tour health seriously.”

The release of the audiobook has been generously sponsored by The Royal Albert Hall, Clair Global, Amazon Music, Support Act, Tag, TAIT, The Music Industry Therapist Collective, Live Nation, Stagehand, Kilimanjaro Live, Rock-It Cargo, Hilton, Rockpool Tour Catering, Universal Pixels, Music Minds Matters and Hipgnosis Songs.

Back to School Summer Sleep Slide? Dr. Bedtime’s Book Gets Children Back On Track

08/12/2025 by Susan von Seggern

SAN JOSE, Calif. — July 29, 2025 — The Sleep to Live Well Foundation (STLW) announces the launch of its enchanting new children’s book, Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic: SuperPowers for Super-Sleepers. Perfect for back to school, it helps families and educators tackle the ‘summer sleep slide,’ when children’s bedtimes tend to slide later during the school break, by preparing them for a healthy, energized return to school. This beautifully illustrated book is now available through the Foundation’s charitable book program and for purchase in paperback, with the hardcover edition scheduled for release on August 14. All proceeds support children’s sleep wellness initiatives.

A Bedtime Story That Inspires Kids with Sleep’s ‘SuperPowers’
Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic is a rhyming, adventure-filled journey that reveals how essential “sleep magic” is for powering up children, animals, and adults alike for a vibrant, healthy day. Co-authored by STLW’s Medical Director, Dr. Roger Washington, MD, a Stanford-trained family physician, aka Doctor Bedtime, and Executive Director, Scarlet Nickhol, MPP, MBA, the book is a playful yet effective tool for instilling in children a love for sleep.

After reading the book to their children, parents reported: “It made my 3.5-year-old Scarlett excited to go to sleep,”; my 6-year-old Adin said, “I want to read it again,” while 5-year-old Allister told his mom, “It’s amazing!”
The book:

  • Explains the importance of sleep for energy, growth, learning, and emotional well-being.
  • Features diverse animals, multicultural characters, and bedtime routines that are sustainable and foster healthy habits.
  • Describes relatable circumstances that may prompt parents and caregivers to start positive Sleep Wellness conversations.

Addressing a National Need
With studies reporting 50% of children at risk of sleep-related illnesses and nearly 45% of American children experiencing ACEs, adverse childhood experiences, Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic is more than a bedtime story—it’s a preventative medicine resource that is trauma-informed by Dr. Washington’s expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The book reinforces the need for ‘safe spaces’ to sleep and motivates children to set goals that break cycles of sleep dysfunction, building their physical, mental, and emotional health and resilience as they grow.

Born out of Doctor Bedtime’s Own Childhood Sleep Trauma
This book was a labor of love and healing for Dr. Washington, who at the tender age of two was placed in an orphanage for three years, enduring many sleepless, trauma-filled nights alone without the sense of well-being that sufficient sleep can bring. Now, as Doctor Bedtime, the family physician of 35 years, educates young children about “Sleep Magic,” the SuperPower for feeling healthy, strong, and capable.

“Sleep magic gives us SuperPowers to grow when we slumber. A reason growing creatures need more of this fantastic wonder!”
— Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic

Charitable Mission and Community Impact
As part of its educational mission, the Sleep to Live Well Foundation will donate thousands of copies of the book to children, families, and community groups. The book is also available for purchase, with all proceeds directly funding the Foundation’s charitable programs. The book is currently available in paperback, with the hardcover launching August 14.

Quotes from the Team
Dr. Roger Washington, co-author and STLW Medical Director, shares:
“As Doctor Bedtime, I want to empower children with the life-long gift of Sleep Wellness, the foundation for feeling healthy, strong, and hopeful.”

Scarlet Nickhol, co-author and STLW Executive Director, adds:

“We created this book to make Sleep Wellness accessible and inspiring for children and families everywhere. Our goal is to help every child become a Super-Sleeper!”

Call to Action
Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic: Super Powers for Super Sleepers is available now through the Sleep to Live Well Foundation’s website. Educators, parents, healthcare professionals, and media are invited to request review copies, arrange interviews with the authors, or order books to support children in their communities.

Shining a Light on An Untold WWII Tale. Jeep Shows Were Front Line Entertainment by Entertainment Soldiers in the Morale Corps

02/12/2025 by Susan von Seggern

Jeep Show Author and Expert Robert B. O’Connor Available for Coverage Leading Up to VE Day’s 80th Anniversary, May 8

Memphis, TN – February 6, 2025—As the 80th Anniversary of VE Day approaches, there are precious few stories of World War II in the European Theater of Operations that have not been told, told, and told. However, Memphis-based author Robert B. O’Connor has found and extensively researched such a story.

His book, Jeep Show – A Trouper at the Battle of the Bulge, was released in late 2024 for the 80th Anniversary of that monumental battle, where much of the action takes place. Jeep Show tells the never-before publicized story of the enlisted entertainers of the Army’s Morale Corp. The book follows Private Jim Tanzer and his squad leader, Mickey Rooney, Hollywood’s top box office star from 1939 to 1941, as their Jeep shows tour the front lines where the USO and the Red Cross could not go. The action ramps up when the Germans attack in force, and Private Tanzer inadvertently becomes part of Team SNAFU, the unit of irregulars supporting the 101st Airborne Division in the heroic defense of Bastogne.

O’Connor notes, “When I heard that Jim Hetzer, the WWII Veteran who inspired my main character, entertained combat troops at the front, my first thought was: enlisted men were entertainers? Like most people, I thought there was just the USO’s civilian celebs entertaining the troops in the rear echelon. But, with their Jeep shows, the brave men of the Morale Corp brought a bit of home and humor to the front lines. Due to the fog of war, some of these men ended up in combat. An irresistible story.”

Jeep Show has become a popular book in military and veteran communities, with O’Connor appearing on many vet podcasts, including Veteran’s Radio, Veteran’s Breakfast Club, and more. Don Abernathy of What’s The Scuttlebutt notes, “I can count on two hands the number of fiction books I’ve read in my life. I’ve read hundreds of books, but I don’t devote time to fiction at all. I did 80 pages last night, and I’ve been thinking about it all day. I have been looking so forward to getting back into it. There’s no better compliment.”

The book has been well-reviewed:
“Although a work of fiction, Jeep Show: A Trouper at the Battle of the Bulge brilliantly draws upon real people, places, and events drawn from the European theatre of World War II. A fun and fascinating read from start to finish, one that rises to an impressive level of literary excellence.” – Midwest Book Review

“It seems odd to call a World War II novel ‘delightful,’ but that’s exactly what you get with O’Connor’s mix of history and fiction as battles rage on and enlisted men entertain the troops.” – Kirkus, Starred Review

“This refreshing take on military fiction masterfully balances the gravity of war with unexpected moments of fun and camaraderie.” – Publisher’s Weekly BookLife, Editor’s Pick

“Band of Brothers meets Forrest Gump.” – Amazon Reader Review

Interviewers find Robert O’Connor an excellent interview with these and many other noting:
“You will not be able to find any time when that dialogue does not fit the time and the place, and the circumstance. Where the history doesn’t match the exact history.” – Jon Hagadorn, 1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries Podcast

“You were amazing. It was an honor.” – Joe Dimino, Famous Interviews Podcast

“Your insights brought such depth to the conversation, and your passion for sharing this important history was both engaging and inspiring.” – Jorge Loza and Wesley Reynolds, Two Motrin and Water Podcast

Jeep Show author Robert O’Connor will make a fantastic guest or expert for the 80th anniversary of VE Day coverage needs. This never-before-told tale is a perfect way to celebrate America’s victory over fascism with the heart and soul of the US Army’s Morale Corp. And couldn’t we all use a little morale in 2025?

New World War II Novel “Jeep Show” Shows the Battle of the Bulge from Inside, Honoring the Battle’s 80th Anniversary December 14 – January 25

12/18/2024 by Susan von Seggern

Book Was an Amazon #1 New Release in Two Categories

Memphis, TN – Released in November, the WWII novel “Jeep Show: A Trouper at the Battle of the Bulge” by Robert B. O’Connor tells the fascinating story of how the U.S. Army used entertainment to boost troop morale during World War II’s darkest hours. The book follows a Morale Corp entertainer who falls into combat during the largest battle ever fought by the American Army, the Battle of the Bulge, which marks its 80th anniversary from December 14, 2024, to January 25, 2025.

A meticulously researched historical novel, “Jeep Show” follows Private Jim Tanzer, a 30-year-old ex-dance instructor who gave up a fatherhood deferment to serve his country. Assigned to the Morale Corps as an Entertainment Specialist, Tanzer performs in mobile Jeep shows alongside Hollywood star and real-life Jeep show star Private Mickey Rooney, bringing moments of joy to combat-weary troops — until he finds himself caught in the Battle of the Bulge.

“While researching this book, I discovered how extensively the Army used entertainment to maintain soldier morale. These soldier performers risked their lives to remind troops of home, yet their story has largely gone untold,” says O’Connor. Adding, “I made my telling of the German Ardennes Offensive, known today as the Battle of the Bulge, and the Siege of Bastogne, integral to the outcome, as true to life as possible so readers understand the uncertainty, discomfort and physical danger imposed on soldiers in combat. While there is plenty of humor in “Jeep Show,” and Army life has its ridiculous side, war is not funny or romantic. War is hell.”

“Jeep Show” makes a fantastic holiday gift for WWII buffs, veterans, and perhaps Grandpa! The book appeals to fans of “Band of Brothers” and “Saving Private Ryan” while offering a fresh perspective on World War II through the lens of entertainment and morale-building efforts.

The book is available through Amazon, where it was a #1 new release in the biographies of the army and biographies of WWII categories.
