Back to School Summer Sleep Slide? Dr. Bedtime’s Book Gets Children Back On Track

08/12/2025 by Susan von Seggern

SAN JOSE, Calif. — July 29, 2025 — The Sleep to Live Well Foundation (STLW) announces the launch of its enchanting new children’s book, Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic: SuperPowers for Super-Sleepers. Perfect for back to school, it helps families and educators tackle the ‘summer sleep slide,’ when children’s bedtimes tend to slide later during the school break, by preparing them for a healthy, energized return to school. This beautifully illustrated book is now available through the Foundation’s charitable book program and for purchase in paperback, with the hardcover edition scheduled for release on August 14. All proceeds support children’s sleep wellness initiatives.

A Bedtime Story That Inspires Kids with Sleep’s ‘SuperPowers’
Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic is a rhyming, adventure-filled journey that reveals how essential “sleep magic” is for powering up children, animals, and adults alike for a vibrant, healthy day. Co-authored by STLW’s Medical Director, Dr. Roger Washington, MD, a Stanford-trained family physician, aka Doctor Bedtime, and Executive Director, Scarlet Nickhol, MPP, MBA, the book is a playful yet effective tool for instilling in children a love for sleep.

After reading the book to their children, parents reported: “It made my 3.5-year-old Scarlett excited to go to sleep,”; my 6-year-old Adin said, “I want to read it again,” while 5-year-old Allister told his mom, “It’s amazing!”
The book:

  • Explains the importance of sleep for energy, growth, learning, and emotional well-being.
  • Features diverse animals, multicultural characters, and bedtime routines that are sustainable and foster healthy habits.
  • Describes relatable circumstances that may prompt parents and caregivers to start positive Sleep Wellness conversations.

Addressing a National Need
With studies reporting 50% of children at risk of sleep-related illnesses and nearly 45% of American children experiencing ACEs, adverse childhood experiences, Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic is more than a bedtime story—it’s a preventative medicine resource that is trauma-informed by Dr. Washington’s expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The book reinforces the need for ‘safe spaces’ to sleep and motivates children to set goals that break cycles of sleep dysfunction, building their physical, mental, and emotional health and resilience as they grow.

Born out of Doctor Bedtime’s Own Childhood Sleep Trauma
This book was a labor of love and healing for Dr. Washington, who at the tender age of two was placed in an orphanage for three years, enduring many sleepless, trauma-filled nights alone without the sense of well-being that sufficient sleep can bring. Now, as Doctor Bedtime, the family physician of 35 years, educates young children about “Sleep Magic,” the SuperPower for feeling healthy, strong, and capable.

“Sleep magic gives us SuperPowers to grow when we slumber. A reason growing creatures need more of this fantastic wonder!”
— Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic

Charitable Mission and Community Impact
As part of its educational mission, the Sleep to Live Well Foundation will donate thousands of copies of the book to children, families, and community groups. The book is also available for purchase, with all proceeds directly funding the Foundation’s charitable programs. The book is currently available in paperback, with the hardcover launching August 14.

Quotes from the Team
Dr. Roger Washington, co-author and STLW Medical Director, shares:
“As Doctor Bedtime, I want to empower children with the life-long gift of Sleep Wellness, the foundation for feeling healthy, strong, and hopeful.”

Scarlet Nickhol, co-author and STLW Executive Director, adds:

“We created this book to make Sleep Wellness accessible and inspiring for children and families everywhere. Our goal is to help every child become a Super-Sleeper!”

Call to Action
Doctor Bedtime’s Sleep Magic: Super Powers for Super Sleepers is available now through the Sleep to Live Well Foundation’s website. Educators, parents, healthcare professionals, and media are invited to request review copies, arrange interviews with the authors, or order books to support children in their communities.

Sleep To Live Well Foundation Launches With Groundbreaking Sleep Wellness Report to Tackle National Epidemic and Transform Public Health

07/17/2025 by Susan von Seggern

San Jose, CA – July 15, 2025 – The Sleep To Live Well Foundation issues an urgent warning in its groundbreaking 2025 State of Sleep Wellness Report, titled “THE SILENT EPIDEMIC: How Lack of Sleep Endangers Over Half of All Americans and Threatens Everyone.” The report unveils the Foundation’s initiatives to address this insufficient sleep crisis with Sleep Wellness—a holistic approach to Sleep Health that offers a deeper solution than trendy ‘sleep hygiene’ approaches, products, and tips on social media.

Established as a private operating foundation by Stanford-trained Family Physician Dr. Roger Washington, MD, FAAFP, Sleep To Live Well (STLW) is dedicated to helping everyone reclaim their natural ability to sleep deeply. STLW is focusing its initial Sleep Wellness advocacy, education, and resources on the most vulnerable: children experiencing toxic stress and trauma.

“Despite decades of awareness, insufficient sleep remains a national crisis—deeply cultural, quietly generational, and corrosive to our health,” says Dr. Roger Washington. “We’re especially concerned about how this epidemic continues to undermine the well-being of our youth.”

The 2025 State of Sleep Wellness Report is a Wake-up Call

STLW’s State of Sleep Wellness Report paints a troubling picture: A 2020 survey revealed that 40 million Americans are grappling with sleep disorders. Alarmingly, 60% of adults reported struggling with sleep problems several nights each week. A recent CDC study worsened this concern, revealing that 50% of children—around 37 million—and 62% of adults—about 161.2 million—are at risk for serious sleep-related illnesses and diseases. The Report underscores the link between insufficient sleep and serious health consequences, with trauma in the lives of Americans from the pressure of modern-day stress and current events.

Sleep Wellness is the Missing Link–the Human Connection

As the Medical Director of STLW, Dr. Washington leverages 35 years treating patients with sleep therapy to develop preventive practices and guidance that extends beyond sleep hygiene tips. This Sleep Wellness approach in all STLW resources addresses sleep-resistant behaviors and trauma-related barriers that disrupt sleep. By combining cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed care, Sleep Wellness motivates behavioral changes and better decision-making for improved sleep.

Key STLW Sleep Wellness Initiatives and Resources

  • Children’s Book: Doctor Bedtime’s SLEEP MAGIC: SuperPowers for Super-Sleepers empowers children to embrace sleep as a source of strength.
  • Parent & Caregiver Guides: Embracing Sleep Wellness – A Family Guide To Transforming Bedtime Resistance Into A Nurturing Ritual. A 64-page guide of advice for children and grace for sleep-deprived parents.
  • Clinical Sleep Wellness Screening Toolkit: A 3-step Sleep Wellness protocol to assess poor sleep quality in children, along with a Digest that supports trauma-informed care in medical settings. Available to participating clinicians who partner with STLW and ACEs Aware.
  • Charitable Programs: As part of its community engagement, STLW collaborates with pre-, elementary-, and after-school programs and other children’s wellness partners to distribute resources.

Initial Focus on Children: STLW’s first concern is supporting children, especially those identified by healthcare providers through ACEs Aware, an initiative aimed at treating adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) early on. STLW is providing children, their parents, and their caregivers with intervention tools that develop sleep “SuperPowers” to combat stress and break cycles of generational sleep resistance.

Empowering Parents and Healthcare Providers: STWL focuses on preventative medicine by partnering with community organizations to equip parents and caregivers with practical guides and bedtime rituals. It also offers healthcare professionals screening toolkits to connect sleep quality with pediatric illnesses and advocate for sleep wellness interventions before sleep disorders and related diseases become chronic.

Leadership
Dr. Roger Washington, MD, FAAFP: Founder and Medical Director. A nationally recognized family physician, educator, and author of Lack of Sufficient Sleep Matters: Decoding the Root Cause of Your Illness, Dr. Washington’s pioneering research and personal journey have established Sleep Wellness as a component of preventive and integrative healthcare.

Scarlet Nickhol, MPP, MBA: Executive Director, Chief Marketing Officer, and co-author of STLW’s educational materials, leads management and administration, program development, partnerships, and outreach.

Call to Action
STLW invites healthcare professionals, educators, parents, and community organizations to join in building a healthier future with improved sleep. TOURING AND MENTAL HEALTH: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY MANUAL AVAILABLE AS AN AUDIOBOOK ON SEPTEMBER 17, 2025

07/17/2025 by Susan von Seggern

Edited by Tamsin Embleton

For immediate release (July 15, London): The widely praised music industry mental health manual Touring and Mental Health; The Music Industry Manual edited by psychotherapist Tamsin Embleton will be released as an audiobook this September 17. Following the paperback publication of the book by the leading UK music book imprint Omnibus in 2023, the new audiobook will be released with an array of special new features including an epigraph by Nick Cave and meditation exercises by Rob Da Bank. The audiobook will also be narrated by the actor and voiceover artist Laura Howard (Midsomer Murders) and directed by Jeremy Hindmarsh (Swervedriver) and Peter Morris (Soho Voices). Music by Edward Butler.

The audiobook makes this essential resource significantly more accessible, especially for those who are neurodiverse, time-poor, or too stressed to sit and read a 600+ page manual. Now touring artists can access the manual anywhere, whether in a bunk, walking around the venue or on long drives.

The first one of its kind, the comprehensive manual, helps musicians, touring artists and those working in live music to identify and cope with the various physical and psychological difficulties that can occur during, or as a result of, touring. Written by health and performance professionals, this timely and essential book provides robust clinical advice, cutting edge research, practical strategies, resources and detailed illustrations. The audiobook features original interview recordings, including powerful insights from artists such as Nile Rodgers, Philip Selway, Charles Thompson IV (Pixies), Katie Melua, Will Young, Pharoahe Monch, Justin Hawkins, Neil Barnes, Kieran Hebden, Laura Marling, Taylor Hanson, Erol Alkan, Natasha Hendry, and Christopher Tait. Also featured are many prominent touring professionals including Emma Banks, Jake Berry, Dale ‘Opie’ Skjerseth, Toby L., Suzi Green, Marty Hom, Tina Farris, David ‘5-1’ Norman, Wob Roberts, Nick Cua, DC Parmet, Trevor Williams, Debbie Gayle and more.

Covering a variety of topics including mental health, peak performance and performance anxiety, addiction, group dynamics, relationship problems, dealing with the media, physical health, diversity and inclusion, crisis management and post-tour recovery, the manual is the go-to guide for dealing with the stress and pressure of being on the road.

Tamsin Embleton says: “In 2010, I was touring Europe with Anna Calvi and Grinderman (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ side project). I’d worked as a venue and festival booker and artist manager previously, and thought I knew what touring was all about. Within days, it became clear that I had completely underestimated how arduous it could be. We weren’t partying – there were no hangovers to blame – just the sheer accumulation of pressure, sleep deprivation, constant change, homesickness, long hours and emotional strain. My mood and mindset deteriorated, and by the time I got home, I had post-tour flu and two burning questions: was I the only one who felt this way? And if not, was anyone addressing it?”

That experience led me to retrain as a psychotherapist and make tour health my specialist field of study. Through years of research and frontline work, I discovered I wasn’t alone – many people struggle on the road, especially under intense touring conditions. Research tells us that performers and crew are at high risk of burnout, anxiety, depression, addiction and even suicidality, yet they are also some of the most underserved by health services. Unlike other high-pressure work environments, most touring personnel don’t have access to occupational health support or HR.

This audiobook explains what makes touring so challenging, how stress impacts your body, mind and relationships, and what can be done to mitigate that stress. It brings together clinical advice from experts in performance health and related fields, along with powerful insights from artists and crew, taken from many hours of original interviews. Hearing people speak in their own words brings these psychological concepts to life in a unique and accessible way.

Today, artists and crew are under growing pressure to tour intensively, just to cover rising costs. But the more intense the schedule, the greater the risk of serious health consequences. Touring can be thrilling and deeply rewarding, but it also isolates you from the relationships and routines that help you stay grounded. Many people are managing pre-existing health conditions that worsen on the road or are overwhelmed by cumulative stress without adequate support in place to help them cope.

This audiobook goes some way to plugging that gap. It’s designed for anyone who wants to better understand and prepare for the realities of touring – and to create healthier, more sustainable practices across the industry. As recent statements from artists like Chappell Roan and Lewis Capaldi have shown, the need for reform is urgent. We can no longer romanticize artist suffering. It’s time to take tour health seriously.”

The release of the audiobook has been generously sponsored by The Royal Albert Hall, Clair Global, Amazon Music, Support Act, Tag, TAIT, The Music Industry Therapist Collective, Live Nation, Stagehand, Kilimanjaro Live, Rock-It Cargo, Hilton, Rockpool Tour Catering, Universal Pixels, Music Minds Matters and Hipgnosis Songs.

Liminal Shade Unleashes “Fixation,” a Darkwave Anthem of Irony and Quiet Rage

07/16/2025 by Susan von Seggern

Los Angeles, CA – July 10, 2025 — The boundary-pushing darkwave trio Liminal Shade returns with their electrifying new single, “Fixation,” a track born from irony, quiet rage, and the sharp edge of consequence.

A Seductive Smirk in the Shadows
“Fixation” came from a place of irony and quiet rage. It’s about desire, yes. But more so about what happens when people get exactly what they asked for. The lyrics repeat like a mantra because that’s how those moments feel: looping in your head, over and over, when someone crosses a line and then plays innocent.

“I wanted it to feel like a seductive smirk, not screaming, just looking them in the eye and saying, ‘You wanted this, remember? Now you get what you deserve,’” shares vocalist Mar Boreal.

There’s a lot of sarcasm in this track. It’s sweet on the surface, like dessert, but underneath there’s bite. Making it feel like reclaiming power, turning frustration into something dark and beautiful. It’s a song for anyone who’s ever been underestimated, objectified, or used—and then watched that energy turn back on the other person like a mirror. You asked for it. Now, you gotta take it how it is.

Liminal Shade: Innovators at the Edge
Liminal Shade is known for their genre-defying sound, merging darkwave, post-punk, and electronic pop.

The trio’s multicultural roots infuse their music with a unique blend of bilingual lyricism and global influences.

Recent releases include acclaimed covers of Joy Division’s “Disorder” and David Lynch’s “In Heaven,” as well as the bilingual dark Latin pop single “Fruta Prohibida”.

Listen Now
“Fixation” is available today on all major streaming platforms. Fans are encouraged to immerse themselves in the band’s evolving sonic universe and share the track using the hashtags:

Liminal Shade Releases ‘Disorder’—An Electronic Reimagining of Joy Division’s Classic

05/15/2025 by Susan von Seggern

Los Angeles, CA – April 25, 2025—Liminal Shade presents ‘Disorder’, a post-punk/electronic cover of Joy Division’s iconic track. The darkwave trio of Mar Boreal, John von Seggern, and Benjamin Thompson reimagine the original with their signature blend of ethereal vocals, postpunk guitar and bass, and textural electronics.

After noticing the song’s resurgence on TikTok throughout 2024, the band was inspired to record ‘Disorder’. What began as a creative response to a social media trend has evolved into something unexpectedly timely.

“The themes of ‘Disorder’ resonate profoundly with the current moment,” notes John, “The sense of instability and disquiet that Joy Division captured decades ago resonates with the collective uncertainty many are experiencing these days.”

Liminal Shade’s version stays true to the spirit of the original while bringing a fresh, modern edge that speaks to the present moment. The track serves as both homage and contemporary commentary, inviting listeners to find their own meaning within its layers.

‘Disorder’ is available now on all major streaming platforms.
