Los Angeles, CA – April 24, 2017 – Chu, an Argentine singer/songwriter living and performing in both LA and Buenos Aires with the band Chu Victoria will bring his unique take on indie rock to fave Silver Lake club Los Globos for their new Wednesday weekly Gran Baile Latin Alternative night on May 10 at 8:30pm.
Born and raised in the turmoil of Argentina’s last military dictatorship in the late 1970’s and belonging to family immersed in the issues of the time, he developed an affinity for solitude, secrecy, and moving from country to country.
Chu began classical music studies at an early age but was very antagonistic to the rigidity of the institutions. Encouraged by his teacher to follow his own path he became a composer and began writing and performing solo or accompanied by different bands in Buenos Aires.
Always looking for a piano to play, since he didn’t own one, he used to sneak into the theater of the grand Methodist Church in downtown Buenos Aires, where his grandmother worked, and play the piano there until the ecclesiastic authorities would discover him and put an end to the unholy improvisation. He also used to spend school-time reading or writing while bouncing around the city on the subway.
At age sixteen, besieged by a wish to leave and travel without a particular aim, he began backpacking around South America. By 20, and following a promise he had made about performing in the London Underground, he left for Europe where he performed with different indie bands. He also fulfilled the promise of playing in the Underground, specifically Victoria Station, from which he took the name for his band. In London, he found a great piano to sneak in and play at beautiful Goldsmith University where a friend gave him the password for the piano practice rooms. He also roamed around France and Spain and finally made it to the States while visiting a girlfriend.
Chu’s first album is called Los Reparidos, which translates into English as “those who give birth to themselves,” based on a phrase by beloved Latin American author Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Recorded in Argentina in 2014, it found its musical roots in 70’s and 80’s Argentinean rock, and is also informed by today’s indie scene.
His second album, Clorofila, was recorded in 2015 and 16. Chu Victoria has been playing it to a warm reception in Los Angeles and will present it in Argentina this July.
Some of the venues he played in Atlanta were Eddies Attic and Smith’s Olde Bar, and in LA he recently played at The Mint, Unurban Café, Harold’s Place, the California Institute for the Abnormal Arts, The Doll Hut, and coming on May 10, Los Globos.
