Joe’s Restaurant, Abbot Kinney’s original fine dining experience where farmer’s market ingredients meet California-French cuisine in a comfortable neighborhood atmosphere in Venice Beach, is pleased to present a monthly jazz series starting in February to coincide with the First Friday’s Art Walks.
Beginning on February 3 at 7pm, Mohr Music will present the First Fridays Jazz Series at Joe’s that will feature instrumental and vocal artists, internationally recognized artists as well as great local talent, signed and unsigned, playing on the heated patio. The 2012 debut event features Venice based, but internationally revered keys player John Beasley, along with virtuosic vocalist Dwight Trible celebrating the release of their new album Duality. The rhythm section on the gig will be Trevor Ware on bass and Dexter Story on drums.
In 2010, two master improvisational musicians came together to perform and record three duet concerts at REDCAT, Jazz Bakery Concerts at Boston Court and a private concert at Mimi’s Jazz Salon. Selected tracks from the live recordings are presented in Duality, a live duet album capturing pianist John Beasley and vocalist Dwight Trible re-imagining, re-interpreting and re-inventing eight jazz standards. With unexpected takes the recordings are fresh impressions on the tangled web of love, prejudice and life. The spellbinding poignancy of Dwight’s voice and his instinctual spacing along with the intelligent, improvisational storytelling of John’s playing melts the protective barrier around listeners’ hearts.
Dwight Trible is a singer who combines the best of vocal virtuosity with musicianship and improvisational skills to the delight of audiences and musicians alike. In addition to performing with his group, The Dwight Trible Ensemble, Dwight is the vocalist with the Pharoah Sanders Quartet and the vocal director for the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.
The Los Angeles Times has aptly summarized the essence of the pianist in one sentence: “John Beasley, the one-time keyboardist for Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, whose playing reflects a variety of generational influences, incorporating the emphatic chordal clusters of Herbie Hancock, the rhythmic quirkiness of Monk and the lush intelligence of Art Tatum into a highly refined personal voice.”
